Trnava, Slovakia is experiencing environmental problems due to urbanization. The study area covers the city and the surrounding region: 16 municipalities, covering the 324.8 km2 , with 92,730 inhabitants. Trnava is an administrative, economic, cultural and science- research center in western Slovakia. It is one of the oldest towns in Slovakia, and is now one of the most rapidly developing cities in Slovakia, with strong industrial investments. Urban growth is causing serious environmental problems: air and water pollution, agricultural land take and low ecological stability of landscapes. The area adjacent to the city is intensively managed large- scale farmland.
